Director of the SFSCA RAS K.S. Golokhvast and Deputy Director for Scientific and Technical Work A.M. Zakharenko discussed technical and fundamental issues with the representatives of the Sakhalin region administration and business on the island of Kunashir (Kuril Islands, Sakhalin region).
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the utilization of marine bioresources for deep integrated processing and the use of the resulting products to improve the efficiency of agriculture.
In particular, the parties came to the signing of an agreement between the SFSCA RAS and major businessmen of the Sakhalin region to create a joint high-tech production facility on the island of Kunashir.
"Today in the Russian Federation there is an urgent need for modern technologies for processing raw materials of the world ocean. Unfortunately, we do not use algae resources efficiently enough. They can be processed not only into known valuable products (agar, pectin and others), but also used to create auxiliary products with great potential application for traditional agriculture. For example, as an exploratory work, we obtained excellent results on pre-sowing treatment of the seed material with flavonoids of algae and got an increase in germination. Besides, we consider the high activity of the obtained preparations against potato mosaic virus as an extremely promising effect. Our results show that after seeds treatment with algae preparations, the immunity of plants increases and they are able to completely defeat virus infections", - said the Director of the SFSCA RAS.
This is not just import substitution, it is a real new direction - marine agriculture. The Pacific coast of the Russian Federation, in particular, the Sakhalin region, is a pioneer region in this direction!
"The Sakhalin region is open for cooperation with scientific organizations on projects in the field of Pacific Ocean bioresource processing. We are very fortunate to be working together with the leader of agricultural science - the Siberian Federal Research Centre of Agro-BioTechnologies of the Russian Academy of Sciences - on a project to process algae at the Southern Kuril site. The algae of the Pacific Ocean is a treasure trove of resources for the production of innovative foods and new types of medicines. I am confident that together we can succeed!" - stated Vasily Evgenyevich Grudev, Minister of Investment Policy of the Sakhalin Oblast.
